2 Go with your child to a good place. A good place may be away from the place he is throwing a tantrum, away from the source of overstimulation or away from the person he is in conflict with.
3 Give your child a timeout, if you think it will help. The timeout should be no longer than 1 minute for every year of their age, and usually not even for as long as that. Remember, a timeout is an opportunity to calm down and reflect, not a punishment. A good technique for giving timeouts is to give yourself a timeout at the same time--and tell your child that is what you are doing, so both of you can cool down.
4 Talk with your child to figure out why he is cranky. Knowing the trigger for his crankiness will clue you in to how to help him feel and behave better. In addition, if your child can articulate why he is feeling bad, then he may not be cranky anymore. This is especially true when children use crankiness as a form of communication to signal that something is wrong.
5 Take appropriate steps to deal with the cause of the crankiness. Put your child to bed, or leave the party, or address the thing your child is afraid of, or call your child's doctor, or help your child resolve the conflict, or reassure your child that one bad report card is forgivable--basically, do whatever the situation calls for to make your child feel better.
6 Treat yourself. Once your cranky child is feeling better, you're probably exhausted and fairly cranky yourself. Do something nice for yourself to help you feel restored.

1 Relax. Calm down. Your cranky child is not a reflection on your parenting skills or on your image. Do not let your child's crankiness make you cranky. Take some deep breaths and let go of any anger, embarrassment or resentment you may be feeling.
